DOMAINE HUBERT LIGNIER

– COTE DE NUITS –

A beautiful, world wide renowned family estate for 5 generations located in Morey St Denis, over 8 hectares in full propriety and 4 hectares in fermage (share cropping)
Around 1880, Jacques Lignier purchases plots of vines in Morey St Denis, where the domain still is today. The domaine was passed on from father to son and still is managed today by the son Laurent Lignier, although father Hubert still helps.

Domaine spreads over 24 wines (Bourgogne, Village, Premiers and Grands Crus)
The motto, is respect of nature in the vineyards, and watching and patience in the cellar.
Laurent Lignier is working towards organic production. For 25 years, all plots have been ploughed, and there is no use of weedkillers and insecticides.
For vinificaton and ageing, Laurent is in favour of very little intervention. Fruit’s quality is essential
All Hubert and Laurent Lignier’s wines are fresh, fine and elegant wines which are also full bodied with a long lasting and mouth watering finish.
Ageing is done in barrels (with little new wood), is long between 20 to 22 months, on lees and without racking after malolactic fermentation. The wines are bottled using gravity, without fining in order to keep the wine’s freshness and its ageing potential.
Production includes famous Grand cru Clos de la Roche, Charmes Chambertin, an impressive collection of Premiers crus (Morey 1er cru chaffots, Chambolle 1er cru Chabiots,
Nuits St Georges 1er cru …) and the world wine known Morey St denis Vieilles Vinges, Nuits St Georges …

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru La Perrière 2014 (France), Red
Reduction. There is good volume and once again solid concentration to the seductively textured, round and sleek medium-bodied flavors that possess a lovely mineral character on the powerful, youthfully austere and mildly rustic finish that delivers excellent persistence. This is very Gevrey in character while being firmly but not aggressively structured and will require at least 6 to 8 years of cellar lime to shed some tannin.

Charmes-Chambertin (France), Red
Laurent Lignier is uncertain hove old the vines here are he says that when his father bought the plot in 1984, they were already old vines. Over the years, there have been lots of replacements of individual vines, but never a wholes are replanting. The vines are in the Mazoyères Chambertin with lots of clay and more grave! then in the Corn bottes vineyard. The wine is nervy and pure with dark fruit. The wine is medium-weight and a bit heaty in texture with good length.

Clos de la Roche (France), Red
2014 : (from a .90 ha parcel of 35 to 45 years old vines located in Monts Luisants and Fremières). An exceptionally fresh and cool if distinctly restrained nose offers up notes of pomegranate and black berry fruit scents that are liberally laced with wisps of sauvage, earth, tea and leather. There is excellent verve and fine detail to the impressively intense and imposingly scaled flavors that are supported by markedly firm tannins on the suave, mouth coating and massively long finish. This very structured effort reminds me of some of the great old vintages made by Hubert in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
